This book traces the story of two long trips: the Louis Desplagnes in 1904-1905 and that of Ferdinando Fagnola undertook several times in the footsteps of the French explorer between 1984 and today. In the early twentieth century Desplagnes was the first European to thoroughly explore the Dogon Country (Mali): his journey of over 2800 km led him to Timbuktu Bandiagara Cliffs and Lake Faguibine back to Bandiagara. Desplagnes brought back more than 500 photographs (many unpublished, are reproduced here) that for the first time documented the dances, masks, daily life and material culture Dogon. In 1907, he published in Paris a book entitled “The Nigerian Central Plateau ‘, quickly forgotten as quickly as its author, who died prematurely at the beginning of the First World War. In coursde this legendary journey to Dogon Country, Desplagnes had written two papers (the “Roadmap” and the “Book Notes”) and drew many maps; is following the directions of these Desplagnes manuscripts, which are published here for the first time, that Ferdinando Fagnola managed to reconstruct and retrace the route of the French explorer, confronting the scene, architecture and manners with a 100-year lag. The travel Desplagnes in 1904-1905, that of Leo Frobenius between 1907 and 1909, that of Michel Leiris in 1931, and Deborah Denise Paulme Lifshitz in 1935, many travel Griaule until 1954, and those of Ferdinando Fagnola spread over 25 years between 1984 and 2009, almost naturally intertwine in this book. Beyond the story of a forgotten journey of exploration, this book is a lively introduction to Dogon culture, art, rituals, material culture, but also to the géographied’un place whose charm has acted on all those who are interested in Africa and its culture. The book includes a contribution of Genevieve Calman–Griaule analyzing the Dogon words quoted in the book by Louis Desplagnes.
