There are over six hundred years, the Akan have started making brass weights for weighing gold dust, the currency of their region of Ghana and Ivory Coast. Finally, they produced the most complete inventory three dimensions of any culture in history. Almost all animals, birds, fish or of a known object of them has been a miniature sculpture. Human figures are represented in the activities of daily life and sacred rites or courtyard with pioneering nature throws and a host of abstract and decorative motifs. The artist Tom Phillips, over the last thirty years, built the largest collection in the world of these lively and imaginative objects and presents here a selection of over five hundred chosen for their artistic quality and interest, accompanied by a full text description of their history, styles, and method of manufacture.
