This book presents more major pieces of art in the Volta Basin, a major series of field photos. Christopher Roy wrote the text based on his doctoral thesis Ph.D. (University of Indiana) and the fifteen years he devoted to the study of the arts in this region. “Art of the Upper Volta Rivers” not intended to be a comprehensive and definitive study of the art of Burkina Faso. The aim of the author is to perform a comparative analysis of the styles of the people who have shaped the history of art in the Volta Basin. He spent some time with the Mossi Yoko in the region. This research has clearly shown that the art of the Mossi is a synthesis of various traditions. He then particularly interested in the art of the western neighbors of the Mossi, Nuna, Winiama, Bwa, Kurumba, Dafing, Bobo and Tusyan. This book focuses on the Mossi and Gurunsi. Bwa and Bobo are included because of their relationships, and to finish Tusyan because many sculptures attributed to them although they are little known.
