Description
This book consists of two volumes. The first brings together the texts with the main ethnic groups who have created works of art, or particular aspects of these ethnic groups, such as the chapter on “poro” of the Senufo. The second book is the catalog of the works of Côte d’Ivoire included in the collections of the Barbier-Mueller Museum; order made following that in which the chapters of the first volume are arranged, namely North, West (and Southwest), the central and southern Ivorian. The text notes follow a continuous numbering and are at the end of volume 1; it is the same for the notes of the catalog together at the end of Volume 2. Geographical names (cities, villages, mountains, rivers, etc.) are written according to the official spelling of the countries to which they belong ; they have therefore been Anglicized if they relate to an English speaking country. Proper names of people follow the same principle. Ethnic names follow the French and English spelling in the respective editions. All names are combined in an index at the end of the second volume; the names of ethnic groups used adjectival form are also cited in the index. The vernacular words quoted in the text of the first volume and the second volume of the records are in italics and follows the official spelling phonetic alphabet of Côte d’Ivoire. A glossary of vernacular words at the end of the second volume. Maps showing the Ivory Coast and its different regions have also been referred to the end of the second volume, which allows to have them under the eyes during the reading of the first volume texts. The bibliography is located at the end of the second volume.
