When Jacob Roggeveen docks on this tiny Pacific island on Easter Sunday in 1722, he first holds that the imposing image of this “strange island populated with gigantic statues enigmatic,” these “moai” aligned on volcanic slopes. Yet alongside this stone statuary, the Easter Islanders had cultivated a discreet and infinitely varied art, kept out of sight. Many wood carvings – male and female anthropomorphic statuettes, half-human hybrid beings, half bird, lizard men, fish, pectorals, sticks “ua” … So many objects that will continue to fascinate travelers collecting what now, can read the authenticity of the Easter Island history and appreciate the genius of the people of sculptors.
