After an introduction in Dutch by J. van der Werff and a lengthy introduction in German by Waldemar Stöhr a description of the land of Batak and various tribes (Toba, Karo, etc,.) follows a descriptive catalog providing detailed information on the Batak Culture, heritage, arts and crafts, daily life, kinship, art and architecture, patterns in decorative art, the female headdresses with copper plates ear characteristics ceremonial textiles and daily local traditional dress, jewelry, home decoration, wood carvings, including ancestral statues and religious objects (magic poles of Datoe, illustrated manuals divination Pustaha etc.)
