Description

This is a book that will undoubtedly landmark. There are twenty years, authors, Jean-Louis Paudrat Lucien Stéphan, Françoise Stoullig Marino, mobilized around Jacques Kerchache, trying synthesis which hitherto missing on African art and that was obviously expected in the collection “Art and the great civilizations.” The company preceded all full or partial publications produced during the 1990s around exhibitions on African arts. With the opening of the Quai Branly Museum, a completely revised edition and enriched with a hundred pieces was required. Most of them come from the new museum, but also from German museums, English or American. To show African art in its very artistic context, it is the principle that guides the approach proposed here. The works are not viewed in isolation but face to each other, which allows us to understand the play of contrasts and similarities, redundancies and changes, the universe in which they originate and what they represent . Far from devout contemplation or purely ethnographic curiosity, this book offers a comprehensive approach to African sculpture by addressing both issues of style than function. This book, completely revised and expanded, will remain unrivaled and certainly still acting.
