This book traces themes through the historic journey of James Cook Maurice de Vlaminck hundred and fifty years of collecting and then collections, studied successively: the art of the ancestors, unusual fates of the ridge arrow Kanak, carved doorframes of Kanak box, the Kanak statuettes (forgotten sculpture), the traditional Kanak currency of New Guinea, the sortilégiques packages, monstrance ax (a Kanak scepter), the sculpture “Then Hyaok, hyapwec” (Child in the cradle), the political mask “apouema” pottery in Kanak countries, carved bamboo fiber skirts and penile cases in the time of early European explorers, the Kanak weapons, canoes and fishing and finally rousette.
