Description
Vladimir Markov said Matvei was born in 1877 in Riga, Latvia. It is one of Europe’s leading theorists of African art. His research led him to museums in St. Petersburg, Oslo, Copenhagen, London, Paris, Cologne, Brussels, Leiden, Amsterdam, Leipzig, Berlin. His pioneering book, The negro art, written in the early 1910s, was published in Russia in 1919 five years after his death. He explains why particular African art has helped the new generation of artists of his time to “get out of the stagnation and the deadlock was Europe“. It is this rare book, found in Russia today, totally unknown to art historians as the World Global provides the French public.
