Description

Since ancient times, the shield has had a variety of uses either a defensive weapon (or more rarely offensive) or as a decorative object or ritual invested with symbolic meaning. This illustrated unique book explores the world of shields, interpret them as beautiful objects with a language of their own. Based on the collections of the Barbier-Mueller Museum in Geneva authors, Purissima Benitez-Johannot, Jean Paul Barbier and Alain-Michel Boyer discussed the literary context, mythological and historical shields of Africa, Asia South East and Oceania. They studied how the patterns on each shield allow us to define where they are from geographically, and reveal the ethnic derivation and function of the shield. Illustrated with over 100 color photographs shields, as well as many historical drawings and photographs of the shield in its original context, this book provides essential reading for collectors, students and researchers, and the general public interested in this field little-known ethnographic art.
